Both the prime minister and the leader of the opposition are committed to a republic. The prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, says that he is an “Elizabethan” and will not do anything during the Queen’s reign. The leader of the opposition, Bill Shorten, advises that as soon as he becomes prime minister he will create a minister or parliamentary secretary for a republic and immediately commence preparations for a plebiscite.
